Our family of 4 – Mummy, Daddy, Daughter (6), Son (2), spend a week at Eberhoeve in the 1st week of August 2014 and let it be said from the start, we had a GREAT time.
The Eberhoeve is located in Sustrum Moor, a few kilometers into Germany from the Netherlands. It is an old farmhouse conversion, which is very modern but still keeps a traditional feel to it.
The property is set on a big piece of grass land, which meant lots of space for the children to run around safely. It is linked to another farmhouse, where the owners’ in-laws live. And they were the ones who took (excellent) care of us. It does have an own separate entrance from the road, with 2 separate gates, so very safe for children. A big bonus for us was the fact that in the pen just next to us, were 3 ponies out grazing almost every day (our children just LOVED that).
The pictures on Facebook and their website does justice to reality. Plenty of living space downstairs, with a separate sofa sitting area in front of an open fireplace, and a separate TV-corner, which does come with a DVD player (though make sure you bring your own DVD’s). The rest of the downstairs living area is used for a very large open kitchen/dining area. From the entrance hallway there is access to the bathroom which has ample space and include a big shower area hidden from view behind a wall, and a utility room with storage space and includes a washing machine.
Upstairs there are 2 double bedroom, one of which is a very spacious master bedroom with plenty of room to include for example a cot bed. The 2nd double bedroom is not very big, but enough for a bedroom, if all do is sleep. On the landing at the top by the spiral staircase there is an extra singlebed (which we didn’t need).
What to do:
The property is set in a remote area on the outskirts of the village of Sustrum Moor. In Sustrum Moor itself, there is practically nothing. There is a small café/restaurant (only appeared to be open Aon certain weekdays) and a bank with a cashpoint. All the rest is residential. The nearest grocery shop is approx. 4 km’s away. But on the plus side, this means that your stay will be very quiet and peaceful. There are a number of destinations for daytrips which we did and can highly recommend.
Papenburg is 30 drive to the north, and apart from the very famous Meyer Boat Building Yard (famous for cruise-ship construction), it is very lovely place with a big park in the center of the town, and to the south of the town is a small open-air history museum.
An extra 30-40 mins to the northeast lies Bad Zwischenahn in the area called Ammerland, which is situated to the south of big lake – Zwischenahner Meer. As the name suggests this is what known as a Spa-town. The area by the lake has lots of recreational facilities, including an open air museum with some historic buildings. There are also boat tours on the lake. All in all a lovely place.
90 mins drive to the south lies Munster which is well worth a visit. It is famous for its Cathedral (St. Paul’s) and one of the features of Munster is that most of the historic attractions are very close together in and around the town center, and can easily be all covered by walking. Just outside the center lies a castle (Schloss) with a Botanical Garden.
If you don’t fancy driving that far, we recommend a visit to Lingen, which is just under half way to Munster (so a 40 mins drive). This is a smaller town but historically it has specific links to The Netherlands through William of Orange.
All in all we had a LOVELY time staying at Eberhoeve, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to come at some point in the future.
